Decentralized Wastewater Treatment for Worker Encampments

With Aspiral™ Smart Packaged plants, installations can meet even the strictest effluent regulations and foster good relations with neighboring communities

The oil and natural gas extraction industry is booming, and where there's a boom, there's a workforce that needs shelter. Typically, impromptu housing springs up to meet the need, but often, these so-called "man camps" overstress the sanitary infrastructure of nearby towns or go without wastewater treatment entirely, endangering human health and the environment.

Aspiral™ Smart Packaged Wastewater Treatment

This is exactly the scenario where Fluence's Aspiral™ Smart Packaged wastewater treatment plants can come to the rescue. When an RV park for oilfield workers in Carlsbad, New Mexico, needed to bring its wastewater disposal into compliance, it installed an Aspiral Smart Packaged plant, meeting regulations and producing water to be used for dust control.

Using Fluence’s best-in-class MABR technology, Aspiral's exceptional nutrient removal produces an effluent that's suitable for irrigation or direct release into the environment, as well as for dust control, toilet flushing, and other nonpotable uses. And, Aspiral's low maintenance and operation needs lets oil and gas operators concentrate on their mission.

The Benefits of Aspiral™ for Worker Encampments

  • High Nutrient Removal
Aspiral uses MABR technology -- including simultaneous nitrification-denitrification -- for nutrient removal that meets standards including California's Title 22 and China's Class 1A and IV. Effluent is suitable for irrigation and release into the environment.
  • Energy Savings
Fluence's MABR modules use low-pressure passive aeration, which reduces energy used for aeration by up to 90%. This low energy consumption allows for decentralized treatment off the power grid.
  • Neighbor-Friendly Operation
Aspiral operates on a small footprint, and its low odor and noise make it neighbor-friendly. It produces water suitable for reuse, reducing competition for freshwater resources.
  • Reduce Pipeline Expense
Aspiral plants are ideal for decentralization, meaning they bring treatment to the point of need so effluent doesn't have to be piped to a distant plant.
  • Rapid Deployment
Aspiral units are packaged in standard shipping containers for fast deployment and commissioning.
  • Flexibility and Scalability
Aspiral units are available in a number of sizes and can be used in tandem to increase capacity. If needs change, units can easily be redeployed or sold.

What is Aspiral™?

Fluence’s Aspiral is a smart wastewater treatment solution that packages our innovative MABR technology in standard shipping containers. This modular solution uses simultaneous nitrification-denitrification for high nutrient removal and reduces energy usage for aeration by up to 90% compared to conventional methods.

The Aspiral Family of solutions offers several model sizes and configurations, with treatment capacities starting at 20 m3/d. Several containers may be connected in parallel to handle large quantities of effluent, up to 250 m3/d. For operating ease, the systems can be remotely monitored and controlled.
