Decentralized Wastewater Treatment

Advances in technology have made decentralized wastewater treatment and water reuse viable even in areas off the grid

In an age of water scarcity, it's necessary to make the most of all water sources, whether that means treating sewage to prevent the pollution of surface water, or treating it further for safe reuse in irrigation or even for drinking.

Fluence's decentralized wastewater solutions take treatment to the point of need and are efficient enough to be deployed even in remote areas off the grid. Decentralized wastewater treatment is ideal for a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including:

  • Small communities
  • School campuses
  • Malls
  • Resorts
  • Golf courses
  • Industrial plants
  • Mining, or oil and gas camps
  • Construction sites
  • And more.

In fact, Fluence decentralized wastewater plants have been playing a role in China's five-year plan, which includes bringing sewage treatment to small villages and remediating polluted rivers.

Best-in-Class Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Technologies

Fluence has a range of efficient, plug-and-play wastewater treatment and reuse solutions. Our products are pre-engineered and preassembled, and can be up and running in record time. They're neighborhood-friendly, producing minimal noise and odor. And they're flexible: Treatment can be scaled up by operating two or more units in tandem, and when requirements change, they can easily be redeployed or sold.

Decentralized Wastewater Treatment with MABR
For sewage treatment, our innovative membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) product line is particularly suited to decentralized settings. MABR technology uses a spirally wound membrane to perform SND (simultaneous nitrification-denitrification) in a single tank. Its passive aeration uses up to 90% less power than conventional aeration technology. This means treatment is possible off the grid with alternative energy sources. MABR treatment produces a high-quality effluent suitable for discharge into the environment or for irrigation.

Aspiral™ Smart Packaged Wastewater Solutions
Fluence’s Aspiral is a decentralized wastewater treatment solution that packages MABR technology in standard-sized shipping containers. Its small- to medium-sized plants are ideal for serving small towns, villages, residential communities, resorts, and more. Aspiral's efficiency makes it suitable for decentralized wastewater treatment off the grid since its low energy needs can be supplied by alternative sources.

The Aspiral Family offers several model sizes and configurations, with treatment capacities starting at 20 m³/d and going up to 340 m³/d with multiple units running in tandem. For operating ease, the systems can be remotely monitored and controlled. Tertiary treatment such as filtration and disinfection are compatible with the process and can be provided separately.

Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Benefits

Economy and Efficiency
Fluence decentralized wastewater treatment plants are housed in standard-sized shipping containers and are ready to go. They're engineered for fast deployment, as well as simple operation and maintenance.

Flexibility and Scalability
Due to smart pre-engineering and design, Aspiral™ units are ready for integration with other systems and equipment. They are completely modular, allowing for capacity upgrades if required. Multiple pre-engineered configurations are available, enabling fast delivery, integration, commissioning, and operation.

Sustainability
Low energy consumption and chemical use reduce the environmental impact of our decentralized wastewater treatment solutions. Additionally, Aspiral's unique design slashes the energy required for aeration by up to 90%.

Compactness and Portability
The compact footprint of Fluence decentralized wastewater solutions minimizes site impact, lowers the cost of site development, and ensures easy expansion with minimum disruption to neighbors or the environment. The modular containers can be easily moved for redeployment or resale should needs change

Operational Intelligence
Operating systems are fully automated, and remotely monitored and operated, which allows for the optimization of processes. Our Smart Packaged designs keep ongoing equipment, operation, and maintenance expenses in check.

What Is Decentralized Wastewater Treatment?

Decentralized wastewater treatment, also known as distributed wastewater treatment, is the practice of locating wastewater treatment plants at the site of supply, demand, or ideally both. It’s a flexible, sustainable alternative to large wastewater treatment facilities that require expensive supply and delivery infrastructure.

Aspiral™ Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Plant in Rural China

With a Smart Packaged Aspiral™ system from Fluence, a remote Chinese village of 5,000 people has gone from having no wastewater treatment at all to having an effective, economical system. The 300 m³/d plant, which was installed and commissioned in just 10 days, produces an effluent that exceeds China's strict Class 1A standard.

Smart Packaged Aspiral™ MABR for Highway Service Area

In China, a Fluence Aspiral system was chosen to provide a highway service area with decentralized, environmentally friendly wastewater treatment. Because the area includes restaurants, accommodations, and shopping, the plant had to be aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly, with minimal noise and odor. The 200 m³/d plant was commissioned within two months.

Four Aspiral™ MABR Systems in Rural China

A Chinese town, which had been discharging sewage directly into a local river, is now producing effluent suitable for release. In the past, domestic wastewater from local residents was discharged directly into the Zhixi River without treatment, which seriously affected the local environment. Now the town has an 800 m³/day Aspiral decentralized wastewater treatment plant that's producing an effluent that meets Class 1A standards.
