Hotels that are increasing water efficiency in areas like laundry and landscape irrigation can take it to the next level with water reuse.

Industry group’s Responsible Stay initiative takes on water conservation while providing guests with an optimal experience

In December 2022, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) announced its Responsible Stay initiative to improve the environmental sustainability performance of the hotel industry in America.

Responsible Stay focuses on four core areas — energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and responsible sourcing — and aims to provide guests with an optimal experience without harming the planet or local communities.

While all four of these target areas are important, water conservation could be considered the most critical. Hotel guests need clean, safe water to enjoy a comfortable stay. A reliable source of clean water is essential for the survival of a hotel and surrounding communities.

Conserving Water With Reuse

Responsible Stay strives to reduce the amount of water used in hotels by improving efficiency in water-intensive areas such as landscaping, laundry, and food and beverage preparation.

Water reuse can also play a key role in helping a hotel reduce its water footprint, thereby improving its environmental and social sustainability performance. Whenever water is used in a hotel, wastewater is produced.

While wastewater has generally been viewed as a liability that needs to be treated and disposed of in a manner that won’t harm the environment or people, it can also be a valuable resource. The wastewater generated by a hotel can be treated and reused for flushing toilets or irrigating hotel landscaping, thereby reducing the dependence on freshwater sources for these applications.

Fluence offers cost-effective, advanced wastewater treatment technologies that can treat wastewater to a high quality so that it can safely be reused on-site. This cuts down costs associated with both water consumption and wastewater discharge.

Energy-Efficient Wastewater Treatment

Fluence’s Aspiral™ Smart Packaged wastewater treatment plants make use of revolutionary membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) technology to produce wastewater that is safe for reuse. MABR technology uses passive aeration and biofilm-based nitrification-denitrification to produce water that’s safe for nonpotable applications.

MABR is extremely energy-efficient, using up to 90% less energy during the aeration process than conventional wastewater treatment technologies. It not only reduces operating costs but also helps improve the hotel’s energy efficiency, another key focus area of the Responsible Stay initiative.

Aspiral™ wastewater treatment plants are packaged inside a standard-size shipping container that can be deployed wherever needed, making it the perfect decentralized wastewater treatment solution for hotels in remote locations. The portable modular design makes it easy to move or scale up should the need arise.

Fluence’s wastewater reuse solutions offer several benefits to hotels. They:

  • Provide a reliable and more sustainable source of water
  • Reduce operational costs
  • Conserve freshwater resources
  • Reduce the environmental impact associated with discharging wastewater effluent into the environment
