How onsite treatment can reduce hauling costs, get capacity online quickly, and scale with changing workforce needs

Workforce housing can be built quickly in places where the infrastructure needed to support it doesn’t yet exist. A remote oil and gas operation, mining project, data center, construction site, or energy development might need housing for hundreds or thousands of workers long before a connection to a centralized sewer system is practical.

That creates an immediate wastewater question: How will the site manage wastewater today, and what happens when the workforce doubles or triples? Continually pumping and hauling wastewater away may work initially, but those costs can grow along with the workforce. Building permanent infrastructure for the project’s ultimate capacity can mean spending capital years before that capacity is needed.

Workforce housing developments have also historically been called worker camps, worker encampments, or “man camps,” particularly in the oil and gas industry. Whatever the terminology, developers still need to answer the same practical questions: How will the site secure a reliable water supply? Where will the wastewater go? How quickly does treatment need to be online? And how can treatment capacity scale as the workforce grows?

For many remote sites, decentralized treatment provides a way to start with the capacity needed today, get treatment online quickly, and add capacity as the workforce grows.

1. Reducing the Cost of Pumping and Hauling Wastewater

When centralized sewer service isn’t available, workforce housing operators may initially rely on pumping and hauling wastewater off-site. That can be practical for a smaller site or during early development, but the economics change as occupancy grows.

More workers generate more wastewater. That can mean more pump-outs, more truck trips, and a growing operating expense for as long as the site depends on hauling.

Onsite treatment offers another option. Instead of continually paying to transport wastewater elsewhere, a decentralized treatment system can treat it at or near the workforce housing site. For workforce housing sites expected to operate for an extended period or grow substantially, avoiding ongoing hauling can become an important part of the project’s economics.

2. Getting Wastewater Treatment Online Quickly

Connecting workforce housing to a municipal sewer system might not be practical when the nearest treatment plant is miles away. Extending sewer lines can require substantial construction, along with pumping infrastructure and ongoing maintenance. And proximity doesn’t necessarily solve the problem if the existing plant lacks capacity for the additional flow.

Workforce housing projects also may not have time to wait for conventional sewer infrastructure to be extended or new treatment infrastructure to be designed and constructed. Treatment capacity may be needed on the same accelerated schedule as the housing itself.

4. Simplifying Treatment at a Remote Site

Operating wastewater treatment at a remote workforce housing site presents its own challenges. Sites may be far from population centers, and operators may not want or be able to maintain the same level of onsite wastewater staffing as a conventional treatment facility.

Automation and remote monitoring can make decentralized systems easier to manage from a distance. System performance can be monitored remotely, helping operators identify changes in treatment conditions and respond without relying solely on continuous onsite oversight.

Beyond simplifying wastewater management, onsite treatment can also create reuse opportunities where they make sense. For larger workforce housing sites with substantial water demand, treating an available local source can provide an alternative to continually hauling water to the site. The appropriate treatment approach depends on the source water quality, required capacity, and applicable drinking water requirements.
