Parte da contamina\u00e7\u00e3o viral tamb\u00e9m pode ser retida, mesmo que os v\u00edrus sejam menores que os poros da membrana, pois podem aderir \u00e0s bact\u00e9rias e ser removidos em conjunto. Esse processo permite uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o significativa da turbidez da \u00e1gua.<\/p>\n<p>A reten\u00e7\u00e3o ocorre por meio da passagem da \u00e1gua atrav\u00e9s de um material poroso ou de uma membrana, podendo operar em dois tipos de fluxo: dead-end ou crossflow.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nos sistemas dead-end, o funcionamento \u00e9 semelhante ao dos filtros multim\u00eddia: as part\u00edculas se acumulam na superf\u00edcie e no interior do meio filtrante, produzindo uma corrente de \u00e1gua tratada.<\/li>\n<li>Nos sistemas crossflow (sempre com membranas), o fluxo se divide em duas correntes: uma paralela \u00e0 membrana, que arrasta os s\u00f3lidos retidos, e outra que atravessa a membrana, gerando a \u00e1gua purificada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Os filtros de cartucho (tipo dead-end) s\u00e3o frequentemente utilizados como prote\u00e7\u00e3o de equipamentos instalados a jusante, como sistemas de osmose reversa ou nanofiltra\u00e7\u00e3o, e ap\u00f3s filtros de m\u00eddia, como filtros multim\u00eddia. Esses filtros n\u00e3o removem s\u00f3lidos dissolvidos, sendo eficazes apenas para part\u00edculas em suspens\u00e3o, como bact\u00e9rias, macromol\u00e9culas e s\u00f3lidos suspensos, permitindo a passagem de coloides, v\u00edrus, dureza, cor, pesticidas e sais.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e3o sistemas simples, que n\u00e3o requerem manuten\u00e7\u00e3o, apenas a substitui\u00e7\u00e3o peri\u00f3dica dos cartuchos (normalmente a cada tr\u00eas meses, dependendo da qualidade da \u00e1gua). Um crit\u00e9rio comum para a troca \u00e9 quando a perda de carga ultrapassa o limite especificado pelo fabricante.<\/p>\n<p>Os meios filtrantes podem ser fabricados em polipropileno, celulose, fibra de vidro ou nylon, enquanto as carca\u00e7as podem ser de a\u00e7o inoxid\u00e1vel, pl\u00e1stico ou acr\u00edlico, conforme as press\u00f5es e vaz\u00f5es de opera\u00e7\u00e3o. Existem filtros sanit\u00e1rios, m\u00faltiplos, absolutos e nominais. Um filtro absoluto de 5 microns, por exemplo, ret\u00e9m cerca de 99,99% das part\u00edculas desse di\u00e2metro, enquanto um filtro nominal de 5 microns ret\u00e9m aproximadamente 90%.<\/p>\n<p>Os filtros de membrana operam em regime tangencial: o fluido de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o se divide em uma corrente permeada e outra concentrada. Em determinadas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es, como na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de sucos, a corrente concentrada pode ser o produto desejado. As press\u00f5es de opera\u00e7\u00e3o variam normalmente entre 1 e 25 kg\/cm\u00b2, dependendo do fluido a ser filtrado.<\/p>\n<p>Na microfiltra\u00e7\u00e3o, s\u00e3o comuns membranas do tipo fibra oca, por exigirem menor press\u00e3o de opera\u00e7\u00e3o e, consequentemente, menor custo de bombeamento.
