Fluence combined its original TWISTER® aerators at a Mexican oil refinery with new units featuring updated engineering

When a large oil refinery in Mexico needed to improve its wastewater treatment, it awarded Fluence the contract to update its original treatment system.

Background

Pemex Petrochemical operates one of the largest oil refineries in southern Mexico. Early in 2002, the refinery chose Fluence equipment for its industrial wastewater treatment needs. The original design for the plant's oxidation lagoon used 16 low-speed, 50 horsepower TWISTER^® surface aerators. This equipment was in use 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for more than 15 years with minimal maintenance needed.

Challenges

When Pemex chose to upgrade its technology to meet higher effluent standards and to reduce energy consumption, Fluence participated in the bid process, along with several other international and local competitors. Fluence was selected once again to provide wastewater treatment equipment for the oxidation lagoon at the refinery.

Solutions

The durability and treatment capabilities of the first-generation Twister stood the test of time, surviving harsh environmental conditions and delivering unmatched power and oxygen transfer. Fluence was able to save money by replacing some of the old aerators with six next-generation, 50 horsepower Twister float units with work decks.

Results

With Twister's improved engineering and technology, the combination of new and original Twister units provide much higher efficiency than the first-generation aerators alone, resulting in energy savings and producing better-quality effluent.
